Empresa de Pesquisa Energetica (EPE), Brazil's federal energy planning company, has identified 15 sites for pumped-storage hydropower plants in Rio de Janeiro state, with a combined total installed generating capacity of 21 109 MW. EPE said it conducted the study to identify locations with favourable topographical conditions to support plans for the expansion of the country's power capacity, as well as to define the regulations governing the operation of pumped-storage plants. Brazil does not have any operational pumped-storage capacity at present, and does not have a regulatory framework for this type of hydroelectric facility. EPE said such units would help to provide flexibility to the grid to meet load variations in the system, which will grow as the share of intermittent renewables in the generation mix increases. The plants would also enhance the safety and quality of the power supply and also allow for expansion of the system in an economical and sustainable way. The company's decennial power expansion plan includes estimations that Brazil will need 13 200 MW of complementary capacity by 2027 to compensate for the intermittency of other sources.
