Ivanhoe Mines Energy DRC has signed an MoU with the Democratic Republic of Congo's state power company Societe Nationale d'Electricite (SNEL) to upgrade unit 5 at the 1424 MW Inga Ⅱ hydropower facility on the Congo river. The project will be implemented as a public-private partnership. An estimated 162 MW of capacity is expected to be available after upgrading the unit, which will supply the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine, ranked as the world's fourth-largest copper deposit. Initial copper production at the site is scheduled to start this July. Surplus power from the upgraded unit will be delivered to the grid to increase access to electricity for the citizens of the DRC.
