The 8 MW Ruo Ndiza run-of-river project in Malawi, completed at the end of 2019, was fully commissioned in 2020, despite some technical challenges with the weak local grid, and has been matching expectations of estimated generation within its first full year of operation. The run-of-river project utilises flow from the Ruo and Ndiza rivers to drive turbines in a single powerhouse and deliver power to ESCOM, the Malawian utility, through a shared interconnector. The project was developed in two phases, with the contract for the full water-to-wire package being awarded to Gilkes in mid-2018, for the installation of three horizontal Pelton turbines.
