A joint venture of SNC-Lavalin and M. Sullivan & Son Ltd (Sullivan) has been awarded a contract by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase for the redevelopment of the Calabogie hydro plant on the river Madawaska. OPG has contracted the engineering companies to examine the technical and economic feasibility of increasing the capacity of the run-of-river station, which is near the town of Renfrew in eastern Ontario, by 5 MW (from 10 to 15 MW). The redevelopment of what is one of the utility's oldest hydro plants would, in addition to increasing the available generation potential at the site, extend the operating life. The plant was built and commissioned in 1917 by the Calabogie Light and Power Company, and taken over in 1999 by OPG from the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario, at the time of the latter's restructuring.
