Moroccan experience in water resources development and dam construction

摘要

Rainfall in Morocco is erratic in both space and time; sometimes years of heavy rainfall are followed by protracted periods of severe drought. Annual rains are heaviest in the northwest (2000 mm), but rarely exceed 200 mm in the southern Atlantic areas, or 50 mm in the Sahara. Total annual rainfall nationwide averages 140 x 10~9m~3, and ranges from 50 to 250 x 10~9m~3. Surface runoff averages an estimated 18 x 10~9m~3/year, varying from 5 to 47 x 10~9m~3. Most of the runoff comes from brief and intense floods, and is unevenly distributed, with 51 per cent of the surface water resources produced in only 7 per cent of the Kingdom. During the past decades, climate change has had a considerable impact on Morocco, resulting in less rainfall and repeated incidences of extreme meteorological phenomena such as drought and floods.
