Construction of the 3050 MW Mambilla hydro project in eastern Nigeria is set to proceed, following the award in late August of a contract to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). The contract, worth around US$ 5.8 billion, covering the design and construction of the project by the Chinese state group, and including both civil works and the supply of electro-mechanical equipment, was approved by the Nigerian Government on 30 August. The project, which has been planned for several decades, is to be financed by China's Export-Import Bank, which will provide 85 per cent of the funding, according to Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing. The Government of Nigeria will fund the remaining 15 per cent. "The award now triggers negotiations for the financing side and after that the project can start," Fashola said.
