Voith has been awarded a contract by Engie Electrabel to automate the 1164 MW Coo Trois Ponts pumped-storage plant in the Belgian province of Liege. The contract, to be completed by 2020, will involve the installation of new control and excitation technology and speed controllers for the six units, ensuring its continued operation and maximum availability for at least another two decades, it was announced in July. The new automation technology is to be installed in several phases, to allow continued operation of the power-plant. Located in Trois-Ponts next to the river Ambleve, the power station uses its water to support the power scheme where water is pumped from the lower reservoir to one of two upper reservoirs known as Coo Ⅰ and Coo Ⅱ. The plant was commissioned in two stages: Coo Ⅰ in 1969 and Coo Ⅱ nine years later in 1978.
