RusHydro, Russia's state-controlled hydropower producer, announced on 8 May the signing of a cooperation agreement with China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) with a view to establishing a joint venture to finalize construction and operate the 320 MW Nizhne-Bureyskaya storage hydro plant on the river Bureya, a tributary of the river Amur, in the Far East of Russia. The agreement is the latest in a series signed by the Russian and Chinese companies since 2013 regarding joint development and operation of storage facilities on the tributaries of the Amur to generate power for the two neighbours, but also to reduce the risk of further major floods in the Far East of Russia and in northeastern China.
