On behalf of the International Centre for Hydropower (ICH) it is my pleasure to invite you to Stavanger, Norway, for the ICH Symposium: the 7th International Conference on Hydropower, and the 25th ICOLD Congress. This collaboration between the Norwegian National Committee on Large Dams (NNCOLD), ICOLD and ICH will bring together specialists, researchers and educators from around the world who are engaged in the hydro-power industry. As a global player in promoting sustainability in the hydropower sector, ICH has organized the 7th International Conference on Hydro-power in the light of recent developments in a global context. Among these are the decision of the United Nations to regard access to water as a basic human right, and the call to all governments to ensure the implementation of this right. In addition, we have seen recent developments in water storage and hydropower, especially in Asia, South America and Africa, together with the. re-engagement of funding agencies such as the World Bank, in favour of the development of hydropower initiatives as a tool for socio-economic progress. These developments make the ICH Symposium timely.
