A week after the marine energy conference in Nantes, EDF announced that a 1 MW demonstrator tidal plant was to be commissioned shortly, near Paimpol-Brehat, France. One of the world's first tidal arrays, it will use two OpenHydro 16 m turbines. They will be connected to a common sub-sea converter to change the output to HVDC. The power will be transmitted to an onshore station, and will be fed into the grid. GE Power Conversion is undertaking development of the subsea converter, as well as the onshore station.
