The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) have committed to financing the construction of the 288 MW Nam Ngiep 1 hydropower storage project on the Nam Ngiep river in Laos. ADB announced on 21 August that it had signed financing agreements totalling US$ 217 million for the project, with the Nam Ngiep 1 Power Company Limited (NNP1), a Lao-registered company, which is co-owned by Japan's Kansai Electric Power (45 per cent), EGAT International, a unit of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (30 per cent), and Lao Holding State Enterprise, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lao Government (25 per cent). The ADB assistance package consists of a US$ 50 million direct loan, a Baht 3.04 billion (equivalent of around US$ 95 million) baht-denominated loan, and a B loan of US$ 72 million. The B loan is funded by the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and Mizuho Bank, with ADB acting as lender of record.
