摘要

A new form of graphite developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, can convert water directly into steam using direct solar energy. The material is essentially a layer of graphite flakes, deposited on a base of carbon foam; this is a porous, insulating compound which floats on water. When sunlight strikes the structure's surface, it cre-ates a hotspot in the graphite, drawing water up through the material's pores, where it evaporates as steam. The compound's bottom layer contains pockets of air to keep the foam afloat, and acts as an insulator, preventing heat from escaping to the underlying liquid. The foam also contains very small pores which allow water to creep up through the structure via capillary action. The structure works much like a sponge that, when placed in water on a hot, sunny day continuously absorbs and evaporates liquid (see also H&D Issue One, 2008).
