As this issue goes to press, we are preparing to welcome the world hydropower community to a unique conference venue, in an area of exceptional beauty, beside Lake Como in Italy. Surrounded by the hydro stations of northern Italy, western Switzerland and Austria, in the heart of European 'hydropower territory', we hope participants will be inspired by the ambience of this region and will be ready for three days of hard work and constructive discussion. It is clear from the registrations received so far that the international gathering for HYDRO 2014 will be eager and well qualified to address all the current key issues and challenges for hydropower and associated water infrastructure. Safety, efficiency and economy will be key themes.
