A pre-feasibility study to investigate the feasibility of the Monont'sa pumped-storage plant in Lesotho has concluded that the scheme will provide significant power to South Africa's rapidly developing neighbour, when required to do so, according to consultant Gibb, a member of the Joint Venture commissioned by the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC). Gibb worked in the JV with EDF (France), URS (UK), and local consultants Knight Piesold and Royal Haskoning DHV, to produce the report, together with GWC, a consulting engineering company in Lesotho. The study took 12 months. The 1200 MW pumped-storage project, if implemented, will meet medium- and long-term energy requirements of the region. Since South Africa has suffered power shortages, and has been rationing the power it supplies to Lesotho, the country has been seeking ways to generate its own energy through hydro generation.
