A water supply project aims to provide 75 000 m~3/year water to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) from Turkey to cover the existing domestic water shortage and for irrigation, where wet farming is limited to only 4 per cent of the total area of TRNC. The water will be provided from Alakoeprue dam, which has been built principally for energy production, on the Dragon stream near Anamur on the Turkish side. The water is to be conveyed to the Anamur coast through a ductile iron gravity pipeline and then across the Mediterranean sea by a suspended HDPE pipeline, which will be laid under water at a minimum depth of 250 m. On the Northern Cyprus side, the water will be pumped to the Gecitkoey dam by the Guezelyali pumping station to regulate the water. Stored water from the Gecitkoey dam reservoir will be pumped by the Gecitkoey pumping station to the Mesaria Plain for irrigation and the Lefkosa treatment plant for domestic water supply. The project comprises two dams (Alakoeprue and Gecitkoey), a 1500 mm-diameter, 21 788 mm-long ductile iron conveyance pipline between the Alakopru dam and Anamuryum balancing chamber, the Anamuryum balancing chamber, a 1500 mm-diameter, 858 m-long ductile iron conveyance pipeline between Alakopru balancing chamber and sea entrance valve rooms, the Guezelyali pumping station and, a 1400 mm-diameter 3157 m-long ductile iron force main to the Guezelyah pumping station.
