The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) has agreed US$ 2.95 million in funding towards Chile's pilot studies for tidal and wave energy. Chile is planning two pilot studies, one tidal and one wave power, off its southern coast. About US$ 2.4 million is classed as investment funding and the remaining US$ 550 000 will fund technical support to help implement the pilot programmes. Christoph Tagwerker, Consultant at the Bank's climate change and sus-tainability division, said: "So far, the potential of tidal and wave power has not been used in the country or elsewhere in Latin America, but it has a huge potential."
