Offshore coordination can cut costs

Instead of building individual connections for future large-scale wind farms, integrating their installation and siting could lead to lowering of the overall construction and operating costs, according to a report by the UK's energy regulator Ofgem and the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The Government's Renewable Energy Roadmap suggests that by 2020, between 11 and 18 GW of wind farm capacity could be built off the UK's coast, compared with 1.6 GW now. A coordinated approach to the siting and construction of projects could reduce the cost of offshore connections by 8-15 per cent (£0.5 to £3.5 billion or €0.6 to €4.3 billion). This would help meet the Government's target of reducing the cost of offshore wind to £100/MWh (about € 124/MWh) by 2020. It could also pave the way for an offshore network in the North Sea, linking wind farms off the UK coast to other European countries.
