Tower configurations being developed by Cleveland State University (CSU), USA, have demonstrated that it is possible to generate electricity at low wind speeds when conventional turbines would remain static. The form of the tower itself is used to funnel and amplify the wind, and direct it to one or more small turbine, distributed within or around the tower. Early experiments with a con- ventional water tower, where water is stored in a large cylinder, showed that wind speeds around the cylinder were amplified, and that small windmills sited at the circumference were able to rotate, although the speed of the wind upstream of the cylinder would not have been sufficient to turn them. Amplification was measured at about 1.5, but can reach up to twice that level.
