Latest installation estimates for grid-connected photovoltaic capacity around the world are reported to have been at least 29 GWp last year, compared with 16.8 GWp in 2010, according to a recent study carried out by EurObserv'ER.Combined grid-connected and off-grid solar PV capacity exceeded 69 GWp at the end of 2011. The EU accounted for 74 per cent of all newly connected capacity. Six countries (Italy, Germany, France, China, USA and Japan) have more than 1 GWp installed, compared with three in 2010 (Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic). Germany and Italy have established a clear lead compared with the others, the study notes, with almost 17 GWp of additional on-grid capacity between them.
