The Republic of South Africa approved in August a draft treaty for the development of the 40 000 MW Grand Inga hydropower project on the Congo river with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The treaty creates an "enabling framework", which the South African Government says will allow the countries to explore together different economically feasible options for developing Grand Inga. The draft treaty will now be dispatched to Kinshasa for approval by the DRC's Government. A committee of officials from the two countries drew up the draft following the signing of an MoU by South Africa President Jacob Zuma and DRC President Joseph Kabila in November 2011.
