Drilling and blasting work at the quarry supplying fill for the Kavsak Bendi dam and 180 MW hydro plant in southern Turkey is well under way, with difficult terrain providing some challenges for contractor AGE Construction of Turkey. The company is using Sandvik drill bits and drilling rigs for the project, and two Sandvik DX 700 top-hammer crawler rigs, equipped with a supply of Sandvik RT300 extra-tough drill bits, are proving effective for the drill-and-blast work, and are claimed to be achieving 50 per cent fuel savings. The new-generation RT300 bits are fitted with spherical buttons. The contractor is also using a number of existing Sandvik rigs from its fleet, and for tunnelling the company is using a newly purchased Sandvik DD320 drilling jumbo.
