The Little Para dam, on the river of the same name, 22 km northeast of Adelaide, South Australia, has recently undergone a spillway upgrade involving the installation of fusegates, to enhance its flood discharge capacity. The dam is owned and operated by the South Australian Water Corporation (SA Water). It is a 53 m-high concrete faced zoned rockfill structure, with a catchment area of about 83 km2 and a total storage capacity of 20800 ML. The dam has an extreme hazard rating according to the ANCOLD Guidelines on Assessment of the Consequences of Dam Failure. Little Para was completed in 1977 and the late Barry Cooke was engaged to provide specialist advice during the design and construction of the dam.
