A technique for improving the efficiency of silicon solar cells is being developed by Solar3D, in California, USA. This involves devising ways of exploiting more fully the incident light falling on a cell, and because silicon is the cheapest material, research has initially been focused on this type of cell. The company says that an unnecessary amount of the available light does not reach a conventional cell, even if it is fully exposed. This happens because approximately 30 per cent of incident sunlight is reflected off the surface. In addition, when a photon strikes the cell, an electron is knocked loose, creating an electron-hole pair which moves through the cell material, creating an electrical current.
