China's Sinohydro is to build a dam and 150 MW hydropower plant in the Democratic Republic of Congo, under a US$ 367 million deal signed in late January by the Chinese ambassador to Congo with the Congolese Government, according to a statement by the Chinese embassy. The Central Zongo II project, in the southwest Bas-Congo province, will be financed by preferential loans from the China Exim bank. Construction will take three years, creating 2000 temporary and 300 permanent jobs. It is expected to produce 860 GWh/year. In 2008, Congo and China signed a USS 9 billion deal to swap minerals for infrastructure projects. The total amount of the deal was reduced in 2009 to about $6 billion at the request of the International Monetary Fund, which said the debt load was unsustainable.
