Renewable energies such as solar and wind are today assuming greater importance in energy supply throughout the world. As these sources of energy are intermittent by nature, there is a renewed interest in energy storage systems which can store excess energy during off-peak hours and redistribute it during peak periods. Pumped-storage plants are very well suited for this purpose, and so currently represent the most cost-effective means of storing large amounts of electrical energy. As conventional pumped-storage plants depend on the available head between two reservoirs, the local geography and topography can greatly limit the number and location of potential sites. To circumvent this problem, Riverbank Power, an independent power producer, in association with AECOM Engineering Consultants, plans to develop a pumped-storage scheme with an excavated underground lower reservoir. The Wiscasset project, the first of several sites to be developed across North America, is described in this paper.
