A characteristic of our World Survey this year is that a large number of schemes which have repeatedly been described as 'planned' over many years, are finally reported as realities, with financing having been agreed, preparatory work under way on site, and completion dates scheduled. Some nations which have not featured prominently in our country reports in the past are implementing schemes for the first time, or identifying hydro as a top priority for the energy sector. A few examples of countries demonstrating this increased commitment are Benin, Gabon, Bolivia, Guyana, and even some islands of Oceania such as the Solomon Islands and Fiji. It is also interesting to note that the USA is contemplating a renewed focus on hydro and pumped storage.
