At the end of the 23rd ICOLD Congress in Brasilia, Prof Luis Berga of Spain completed his three-year term of office; at the Executive Meeting on 23 May, Prof Jia Jinsheng was elected for the term 2009-2012, with arnlarge majority of votes. They were invited to share some reflections on their respective terms of office: achievements of the past three years by Prof Berga (sections 1 and 2 of this article), and priorities for thernfuture by Prof Jia Jinsheng (sections 3 and 4).rnIt is a pleasure and an honour for us to present to the readers of the International Journal on Hydro-power & Dams an overview of the main activities of ICOLD over the past few years and some of the most important challenges for the future.rnICOLD is a great team, with 90 member countries, more than 10 000 individual members, and more than 500 international experts who take part in the tasks undertaken by the 24 Technical Committees. The Committees have published more than 140 Bulletins and Reports during this period.rnUp to 2009, 23 International Congresses and 77 Executive Meetings have taken place, on all continents of the world, and in the leading countries in terms of the construction and management of large dams. ICOLD has also held numerous international symposia and workshops.
