The week of ICOLD's 76th Annual Meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria, as usual provided participants with a wealth of information on dam engineering experience and hydropower in the host country, as well as a valuable exchange of experience among representatives of about 60 countries, at the various meetings, excursions and social events; all was well organized by the Bulgarian National Committee. A special feature was a comprehensive report by the Chinese National Committee on Large Dams concerning the impact on dams of the recent devastating earthquake in Sichuan Province, which was presented by Prof Chen Houqun during the Symposium (see pp24-26).
