Colombia has an area of 1 142 000 km~2 and a population of about 44.4 million (projected for 2008, based on a 2005-06 census, which is below previous projections). The total mean annual precipitation volume is 3400 km~3, and the total mean annual runoff is 1700 km~3. There are 55 large dams in operation, including 20 more than 60 m high. The total storage capacity of all dams is about 3 km~3 (equivalent to about 15 400 GWh energy storage capacity). About 73 per cent of inhabitants have access to a drinking water supply. Construction of the 45 m-high Cantarrana dam was completed in 2007. This dam, located on the outskirts of Bogota, is for flood control.
