摘要

Ethiopia has an area of 1.1 × 10~6 km~2 and a population of more than 74.8 million (June 2006). A large number of rivers, flowing from either side of the rift valley, form a drainage network that covers most of the country. Average annual rainfall varies between less than 100 mm in the low-lying areas of the northeast, up to 2800 mm in the higher areas of the southwest. The total renewable surface water resources of the country are estimated to total around 122 × 10~9m~3 from 12 major river basins; renewable groundwater resources are estimated to be around 2.6 × 10~9m~3. It was estimated in 2005 that only 42 per cent of the total population (82 per cent of the urban population and 35 per cent oF the rural population) have reasonable access to a water supply; however, this is projected to reach 100 per cent and 98 per cent for urban and rural areas respectively by 2012. At present esti mates for average per capita water consumption vary between 12 and 25 litres/day in urban areas.
