摘要

A system which mimics the photosynthesis of plants has been developed by Prof Nocera from MIT, USA. It uses abundant, non-toxic natural materials, and has the potential for storing electrical cheaply and easily. The key component in the process is a new catalyst which produces oxygen from water; another catalyst produces hydrogen. The new catalyst consists of cobalt metal, phosphate at an electrode; the other catalyst, based principally on platinum, is already well known, placed in water. When the two are used to form the two electrodes in water, the cobalt and phosphate form a thin film on the electrode, to produce oxygen, while the platinum facilitates the generation of hydrogen at the other electrode, when an electric current is applied.
