Design challenges and solutions for the Karahnjukar spillway

摘要

The 690 MW capacity Karahnjukar hydroelectric scheme, at present in an advanced stage of construction in eastern Iceland, will harness water from two glacial rivers originating in the large Vatnajokull glacier. Spillway facilities for the Halslon reservoir will be located at the 198 m-high Karahnjukar dam, conveying the water into the 100 m-deep and narrow Hafrahvammagljufur canyon. The hydraulic design of the spillway facilities was achieved by a systematic review and consistency of applicable hydraulic and related structural criteria. The paper presents a summary of the main aspects of project development, including an overview of local conditions and constraints, design criteria, relevant results of investigations and conclusions that have led to the final design of the spillway facilities at present under construction.
