An overview of the Esti project, outlining the main technical features and focusing also on contractual and financial aspects, is given in the article in on p52. In this paper, more details are given of the Barrigon concrete faced rockfill dam, a major element of the project. Originally planned as a conventional embankment and redesigned as a CFRD, the dam benefited from a number of innovative design features and construction techniques. This article is an extract from a paper presented at HYDRO 2004 in Porto. A number of specific design choices played an important role in guaranteeing the timely completion of the 120 MW Esti hydropower project in Panama (see also p52). The EPC Contract stipulated a completion time of only 33 months from contract award to substantial completion with all risks carried by the contractor. High liquidated damages would occur for failure to complete the project in time. Barrigon dam, one of the main elements of the project, was originally designed as an earthfill dam with a central clay core, but time constraints and the EPC contract requirements prompted a change to a CFRD type after the construction had started.
