摘要

Water-wheels appeared at the end of the second century BC, and for about 2000 years remained the most common source of power used by mankind. In the range of small heads and small flow rates, they can still produce energy with a high efficiency (up to 85 per cent). In this paper, the design of overshot water-wheels based on old treatises, especially that of W. Mueller, is presented. Measurements of the efficiency hillchart give insight into the main phenomena and confirm favourable behaviour which is useful for small hydro applications today.
