The role of dams as an effective tool for development has been well established for centuries. There are marvellous examples which can be observed in China and India, as well as other countries with a long history of civilization. There are plenty of success stories, and to quote some of the ancient ones, we can refer to Dujiangyan in Sichuan Province, China, a multipurpose project built around 256 BC, and the Grand Anicut across Cauvery in Tamil Nadu in India, built by the Great Cholas around 200 AD. The Periyar dam, Wilson dam and various other storage dams in India built more than 100 years ago have demonstrated their longstanding crucial role in supporting irrigated agriculture.
