Social and environmental aspects of India's 1000 MW Indira Sagar project

Large storage schemes are vital for India to cope with the vagaries of monsoon and drought, but on the other had they also entail environmental impacts. This article, based on a paper published in the Proceedings of Hydro 2003 [Dodeja and Bhatt, 2003], describes the case of the Indira Sagar project, now under construction on the Narmada river, with particular reference to efforts made for the prediction, management and mitigation of environmental and social impacts. Innovative construction methods which are keeping the project ahead of schedule, to meet urgent power demands for the State of Madhya Pradesh, are also described. Indira Sagar is an ambitious project on the Narmada river, in the district of Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, India. With an installed hydro capacity of 1000 MW, it will have the largest reservoir storage capacity in the country, and will provide water to all the downstream projects in the Narmada river system, such as Omkareshwar and Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh and Sardar Sarovar in Gujarat.
