From 16 to 22 May, Seoul will be the gathering point for specialists in the field of dams and hydropower from all over the world, at the 72nd Annual Meeting of ICOLD. This article gives an Introduction to the host country and venue, and presents some of the highlights of the event. For many years the Annual Meetings of ICOLD have been a forum for dialogue regarding the latest information and research in the field of dams. It has represented another step forward in the recognition of dams as an indispensable tool for improving the standard of living of the world's population. The general programme for this year's activities during the week in Seoul are shown in the Table on p38.
