Small hydro secures energy for Ugandan hospital

A new system to improve the management of energy deficits and surpluses using a small hydro system feeding Kisiizi hospital, Uganda, has reduced the number of overload outages, while still maintaining an adequate supply for non-medical requirements. Kisiizi hospital in southwest Uganda was founded in 1958 and serves a large rural area. In the mid-1980s, a 60 kW hydro system was installed using a turgo turbine, synchronous generator and electronic load controller. This replaced a smaller hydro system and is the only electrical power supply for the hospital. Despite continuing growth of the hospital itself, and of accommodation for its staff, the whole complex is still using this small hydro plant as its sole supply, with the hospital automatically having priority in times of high demand. This has been achieved thanks to the provision of a new load management system which was recently installed. The so-called 'ballast loads', where excess energy is directed in times of low demand, consist of room heaters and water heaters; these are automatically cut out when demand is at its peak, and then other nonurgent loads are selectively open-circuited to ensure the hospital supply is sustained.
