Over the past few years, water resources development projects have increasingly become the target of criticism from environmental groups. Hydropower schemes, particularly when large dams are involved, have also been called into question, and the inherent technical and environmental benefits of hydro have been understated or even overlooked in the policy documents of such influential organizations as the UNDP. WEC, IEA, the EU and the Clinton Administration in the USA. A glance through the country reports in our World Survey (pp47-209) will reveal several things of relevance to the current debate.
