Throughout history, radical innovation breakthroughs have provided the source of society's greatest advances in living standards and industrial productivity. The Schumpeter [1939] "creative destruction" model, based for the first time on periodic revolutions in technology, established a firm theoretical foundation for these phenomena that stimulated a basic research emphasis in industry and academia during the last half of the 20th century, sparked by the challenge of Vannevar Bush [1946] for "Science, the Endless Frontier."
