摘要

Although the field of Operations Management has a long history with a rich body of research, many changes are emerging in today's economy. The turbulent world economy and frequent natural, financial, and political disruptions pose difficulties for outsourcing and supply chain management. In another aspect, with the advance of information technology, companies can store and utilize every single bit of information on production, inventory, service, and consumer activities. Such deeper understanding of consumer needs allows for more personalized products, services, and even personalized pricing. Moreover, more powerful central processing units (CPUs) and cloud computing make it possible to perform complex optimization rather than seeking heuristic algorithms, therefore decisions often can and need to be made instantly rather than offline. The era of big data calls for better integration of operations research, statistics, and computer technology.
