ABSTRACT The durability of surfacing is an important parameter in asset management processes to enable minimum cost options to be considered over a long period of time. Cost can not only be in financial terms but also in environmental terms by including the embedded CC2e. Obtaining accurate lifespans for various surfacing types is difficult but a UK wide consensus on target design lives has been achieved for use in asset management programs for determining money allocations and planning maintenance activities in the near and more distant future. Achieving at least the target design life on any scheme demands attention to all parts of the design, materials' supply and installation and ongoing maintenance activities. Failure in any aspect can lead to very premature failure, reduced service level, public complaint and loss of political confidence in the profession.
