A number of asphalt reinforcement projects involving grids are now reaching an in-service life of 20 to 25 years. Pavement projects reaching a life of 20 years (a standard pavement maintenance cycle) provides confidence on the in-service durability of the grids used at the time. Grids have been used in association with asphalt in applications covering primarily reflective cracking mitigation, but also to address a number of other issues, such as structural degradation of asphalt pavements on weak subgrade or differential settlement in road widening projects. Although the performance of reflective cracking mitigation projects has been regularly reported in publications, reference sites where grids were used for other purpose than reflective cracking are less often presented. This publication reviews a number of typical case studies located in different parts of the world, particularly Europe, and covering reflective cracking as well as other applications. The projects selected are representative in the sense that the objectives -as well as the design- were sound and no major problem occurred during construction. After a comparative analysis of the projects selected for this investigation, this paper focuses on the lessons that can be learnt from such sites that may be used to address current pavement challenges. This survey provides field evidence that grids can effectively control asphalt cracking related to phenomenon ranging from fatigue to differential settlements.
