MEASURING AND EVALUATING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ASPHALT AT LOW TEMPERATURES

The European Asphalt Specification covers a wide range of test procedures to evaluate asphalt characteristics. However, tests evaluating crack resistance and the performance of asphalt at low temperature are yet to be included. The German testing procedure on the other hand, allows for the evaluation of asphalt characteristics at low temperatures. With increasing demand for such test, the German approach will be reviewed by the European counterparts for possible adoption in the European Specification upon presentation by the work committee AK 7.6.5. "Performance of Asphalt" (Head: M. Hase) of the German Road and Transportation Research Association (FGSV). As a result in summer 2008 the prEN 12697-46 could be introduced to the Europeean Committee. The following paper presents the German experiences with the testing procedure during the last twenty yearsrnThe German test system consists of Uniaxial Tension Stress Tests (UTST) and Tensile Stress Restraines Specimen Tests (TSRST) carried out at different temperatures. The UTST assesses the tensile strength, failure strain, while the Thermal Stress Restrained Specimen tests assess the failure stress, temperature and the cryogenic tensile strength versus the temperature. By combining the results of the UTST and TSRST, the tensile strenght reserve in relation to the temperature is estimated. This tensile strength reservere represents the tension from the traffic load that an asphalt layer should bear in addition to the cryogenic stresses due to temperature drops.rnThis paper describes the testing procedure and illustrates the potentials of the test system. The application of the test for the prediction of asphalt performance at low-temperature conditions is evaluated using different asphalt mixtures.
