摘要

So much has been written about Brexit, both before and since the June 23rd 2016 UK Referendum on the matter, that it is now remarkably rare to find a new or surprising piece of non-fiction research or writing on this topic. I note this somewhat humbly as one of the contributors to this immense body of speculative, theoretical and empirical literature in that a year after the event, I was co-author of report on young people's hopes and fears regarding Brexit. There, despite interviewing groups of young people from a diverse range of communities across the length and breadth of the UK, we heard and subsequently reported and reflected on a limited number of stories similar to those that were already beginning to be told in more reflective media commentaries: a recognition that a lack of political literacy frustrated attempts to separate fake from real news about the EU; generational fault-lines in families and communities and across the country; a sense of betrayal and a deeper sense of anger and anxiety about the ways in which years of austerity have stripped away social protections, economic security, and solidarity; and an overwhelming sense of disgust at the way politicians and the mainstream media played on broken solidarity and devastated communities to encourage a xenophobic, nostalgic, nationalistic and ultimately self-destructive response. On a couple of major points, though, we came to different conclusions than some other studies and similar ones to Seidler, and I will return to these in coming paragraphs.
