Gas turbine manufacturer Rolls-Royce discusses the differences in the generation industry between 1977 and today and how its products have changed with the times. Twenty five years ago the SK30 packaged generator set led the Rolls-Royce fleet of power producers in world markets. This 30MW set used the industrial Olympus C gas generator as the most powerful and advanced single power plant Rolls-Royce had yet produced. The industrial Olympus was derived from the aero engine that powered the delta-winged Vulcan bomber in Royal Air Force service from the 1950s to the 1980s. Olympus design work had begun back in 1945 and this pioneering engine proved the most powerful of that early jet era - and the world's first two-spool gas turbine.
