Using a comparison of an engine from 1977 to a modern product, MTU shows how there has been considrable technical progress in 25 years. The idea of emergency gensets at MTU's predecessor company Maybach Motorenbau goes back to 1917 when the company put up three engine/generator sets to provide emergency power for its own facilities during the unstable time of the first World War. MTU took up serious series production of stationary power systems in the 1950s. At the time, the company focused mainly on emergency, pump and drilling rig gensets. Later, prime power and continuous power installations were added to the product programme.
