The dual goals of increased fuel efficiency and decreased environmental impact are today's main drivers in the design of electric generators based on diesel or gas reciprocating engine technology. While these also have been individual goals all along, it has only been within the past few years that power generation manufacturers have made major breakthroughs in both areas at the same time. Diesel-powered generators in the range of 500kW to 3MW continue to find broad application worldwide for standby and emergency power, as well as for utility peaking and distributed generation (DG) applications up to 1,000 hours annually. While traditional diesel technology has been burdened with high NOx and particulate matter (PM) emissions, new engine designs, electronic controls and exhaust after-treatment strategies have made dramatic reductions in diesel emissions. Diesel generating technology has been around for more than 100 years and has a unique set of advantages as a source of power. Recent engine performance enhancements and emissions controls will serve to keep diesel technology as a viable option even in environmentally sensitive locations well into its second century. For higher hour applications, lean-burn, gaseous-fuelled reciprocating engine generators under 2MW have found wide application in North America and around the world where power users are seeking low fuel costs combined with low emissions. In prime power applications requiring more than 2,000 hours of operation annually, natural gas-powered engine generators have been shown to be both economical and environmentally friendly.
