Wayside train monitoring systems (WTMS) are playing an increasingly-important role as railways try to cope with rising wear and tear caused by increasing traffic. But while freight railways in the United States, Canada and Australia have WTMS with large numbers of centrally-networked sensors, the situation in Europe is far more complex due to the mix of traffic and the lack of cross-border data exchange procedures and common standards.
