The Pakistan government will inject Rs 4bn ($US 46m) into Pakistan Railways (PR) in an attempt to revive its railfreight business, which has almost ceased to operate with only one scheduled freight train a day. The funds will be used to procure locomotives and repair tracks. A large proportion of the PR locomotive fleet is out of service due to insufficient maintenance, although the National Logistics Cell has been awarded a contract to repair some of them. PR has also been steadily reducing the number of passenger trains it operates as it tries to grapple with its worsening financial situation.
